If you’ve been riding for years, you already feel it.

Drivers are more aggressive. Vehicles are bigger. Visibility is worse. And the simple truth is this:

The modern roadway is stacked against motorcyclists more than ever before.

This isn’t just a feeling—it’s the result of real changes in vehicles, driver behavior, and road dynamics.

You’re putting your life on the line every time you ride.

Cars Are Faster Than Ever — And Drivers Are Using It

Today’s vehicles are not what they were 10, 20, or 30 years ago.

Even basic cars now:

• Hit 0–60 mph in 5–7 seconds
• Have instant torque (especially EVs)
• Come with sport modes that encourage aggressive driving

SUVs—which used to be slow and bulky—are now:

• Turbocharged
• High horsepower
• Surprisingly quick off the line

What This Means for Riders

Drivers:

• Close gaps faster
• Change lanes more aggressively
• Underestimate your speed

And most importantly:

They don’t expect a motorcycle to accelerate like you do—or be where you are.

The Rise of SUVs — Bigger, Higher, More Dangerous

Look around any freeway.

SUVs and trucks dominate the road.

These vehicles:

• Sit higher
• Have larger blind spots
• Physically block motorcycles from view

The Reality

When you’re on a bike:

• You are often completely hidden behind or beside an SUV
• Drivers literally cannot see you
• Their mirrors don’t cover you

And when they merge?

You’re not “ignored”—you’re invisible.

Tinted Windows — The Death of Eye Contact

There was a time when you could:

• Look a driver in the eye
• Read their intention
• Know if they saw you

Not anymore.

Today:

• Heavy tint is everywhere
• You can’t see the driver’s face
• You lose a critical safety signal

Why This Matters

Eye contact used to save lives.

Now?

You have to assume they don’t see you—even if you’re staring right at them.

Modern Cars Are Too Quiet — And Too Insulated

Modern vehicles are built for comfort:

• Noise insulation
• Double-pane glass
• Sealed cabins
• Premium sound systems

Electric vehicles add another layer:

• Nearly silent at low speeds

The Dangerous Truth

Drivers:

• Can’t hear your engine

• Cut lanes aggressively

And You?

You don’t have:

• A steel frame
• Airbags
• Crumple zones

The Hard Truth Every Rider Must Accept

Let me say this as clearly as possible:

You cannot ride like drivers see you.

Because most of the time…

They don’t.

The Only Safe Mindset: Ride Like You’re Invisible

This isn’t fear-based riding.

This is survival-based riding.

What That Means in Practice

You must:

• Assume every car will merge into you
• Assume every driver will turn left in front of you
• Assume every blind spot contains danger

Ride like:

• You are not seen
• You are not heard
• You are not expected

Because in today’s environment:

That’s reality.

Practical Survival Rules for Modern Riders

1. Stay Out of Blind Spots

Never sit next to a car longer than necessary.

2. Control Your Lane Position

Make yourself visible—but never predictable.

3. Cover Your Brakes

Always be ready to react instantly.

4. Avoid Riding in Packs of Cars

Find space. Create space. Protect space.

5. Assume Left Turns Will Kill You

This is still the #1 motorcycle accident scenario.

6. Use Your Headlight Strategically

Not just “on”—but noticeable.

7. Don’t Trust Signals

Turn signals lie. Movement tells the truth.

From a Biker Lawyer’s Perspective

I don’t just ride.

I see what happens after the crash.

I see:

• The injuries
• The insurance battles
• The lifelong consequences

And I can tell you this:

Most motorcycle accidents are preventable—from the rider’s side—if you assume the worst early enough.

Final Thoughts — Stay Alive, Stay Aware

The road isn’t what it used to be.

It’s faster. Louder. More aggressive. Less aware.

And more dangerous for bikers.

So adapt.

Not tomorrow.

Not next ride.

Right now.

Electronic Sign along California Freeway

Some of my readers have reported seeing motorcycle safety messages on signs all over California. This intrigued me so I looked into it.

It appears that it is true; the California Highway Patrol has started a campaign to make motorists more aware of motorcycles. The message, “Share the road, look twice for motorcyclists,” is being shown on over 700 electronic signs across the state.

I along with probably tens of thousands of California motorcyclists, applaud the California Highway Patrol, the Office of Traffic Safety and Cal-Trans for recognizing the importance of motorcycle safety, and for utilizing this very effective medium to promote highway safety.

I hope that these signs will continue to be used to display motorcycle safety messages. I think that these messages being shown to literally millions of motorist all over California will make everyone more aware of motorcyclist, and may even create some cognitive behavior changes in cager’s reactions to motorcyclist. Who knows?

On a stretch of the 405 freeway, where just one of the hundreds of signs is located, it’s estimated that 250,000 vehicles pass through every day.
