California Motorcycle Accident Attorney and Biker Lawyer Rides the Recently Re-Opened Angeles Crest Highway.

One June 13, 2009, one week before my 46th birthday, my fiancé drove me to my house to pick up my Harley Davidson Electra Glide so that I could ride it to our new home. Well, I decided to take a major detour so to say…… You know how it is :)

I heard that the Angeles Crest Highway to Wrightwood, which has been closed for basically the past 4-5 years was recently repaired and finally reopened.

This is one of my favorite runs of all time, and it is local. I thought that with the budget crisis in California, and the severity of how the road was washed out during storms many moons ago, that there was a possibility of never being able to do this run again in my lifetime. I have heard people spouting off about roads with twisties; well let them ride the Angeles Crest and tell me what they think!

I shot the below first person perspective video with my cell phone camera, a Samsung Memoir, in one hand, and holding on to the throttle with the other. I do not ever recommend anyone ever trying this or doing this at home. Although I am a motorcycle accident attorney and a biker lawyer, I have been riding motorcycles for over 30 years and let’s just say that I think I am a decent rider.

The beginning of the video shows some video of the staging area, a traditional stop before Newcomb’s Ranch, Newcomb’s Ranch, my secret spot at 8,000 feet above sea level, and then some kick ass first person riding footage. The end of the movie is kind of a surprise.

Tell me what you think!

A Video Taken by Me While Riding my Harley Davidson Electra Glide Motorcycle on Pacific Coast Highway.

I went motorcycle riding yesterday with some of my brothers and a friend. My friend and I split off later and went to the Rock Store, and Neptune’s Net via a really nice twisty route that I know in the Santa Monica Mountains.

I have this new nifty touch screen phone called a Samsung Memoir that has an 8MP camera built in, with video capabilities.

Just for the heck of it, I decided to try out the video camera on the phone while cruising up the coast. I filmed from behind the dashboard of my Harley Davidson Electra Glide while riding. I then uploaded the video to YouTube. For those who have never ridden a Harley Davidson Electra Glide Motorcycle, this video kind of shows what it is like from a first person perspective.

The video came out fantastic, but the YouTube upload kind of sucks. Look at the videos below and tell me what you think.

More to come!

A Motorcycle Ride With a Friend to Solvang California

California motorcycle accident lawyer Norman Gregory Fernandez discusses motorcycle trip to solvang CaliforniaA couple weeks ago my old lady, and a friend and I rode our motorcycles to Solvang California. I thought I would write an article about the ride to Solvang.

As usual, I found myself on a Friday night contemplating where I could ride over the weekend.

One of my favorite rides has always been to Solvang California. Solvang California is a Danish town just off of the Pacific Coast Highway, approximately 114 miles from where I live in Chatsworth California. You can read about Solvang California by clicking here now.

Not only is a ride to Solvang usually an excellent motorcycle ride, there is some great food and partying once you get there.

I called one of my good friends on Friday night to see if he wanted ride with me and my old lady to Solvang. He said yes, and we agreed to meet on Sunday. My old lady was a back seat rider. I met my friend where the 118 freeway meets Topanga Canyon Blvd, in Chatsworth California.

solvang motorcycle accident lawyer Norman Gregory FernandezWe then jumped on the 118 freeway and rode to Simi Valley Harley Davidson, because I wanted to pick up a quart of oil to keep in my saddle bags just in case. You can see a picture of my friend and I in the upper left corner, at Simi Valley Harley-Davidson. Please note that my friend did not want his picture publicized to the world by way of the biker law blog, I have therefore smudged his face to conceal his identity.

Once we left Simi Valley Harley-Davidson, we proceeded on the 118 freeway, to the 23 Freeway, to the 101 N., and proceeded to roll to Solvang.

The weather was absolutely fantastic, and in the upper 80s with not a cloud in the sky.

The traffic however, was another matter. The traffic was absolutely horrible. As a matter of fact, it seems to get worse and worse every time I ride the 101 N. We ended up having to lane split pretty much from Camarillo past Ventura, and along a good stretch of the 101 before Santa Barbara. Once we got past Santa Barbara the traffic subsided.

The lane splitting was so treacherous, we ended up stopping for a rest in Carpinteria and grabbed a quick cup of coffee.

Once we got past Santa Barbara it was a great ride up the coast to Solvang. Both my friend and I were able to open up our throttles with the Pacific Ocean to the left of us, and enjoy the ocean breeze and the excellent views on this run.

biker attorney Norman Gregory Fernandez discusses motorcycle ride to solvang CaliforniaWhen we eventually got to Solvang, we stopped at the first gas station to top off our tanks. We ended up seeing a whole bunch of bikers at the gas station. I assume that they were in some riding club because they were all riding together.

My friend and I then cruised the short distance to Solvang. At this point none of us had eaten anything all day. We had a short debate as to what type of food to eat. We were all hungry. We decided to eat at an out of the way Mexican restaurant in Solvang that ended up having excellent food. Solvang is not noted for its Mexican food, so it was kind of unexpected treat.

At this point my friend informed me that he had to be back in the San Fernando Valley by 6:00 PM for a meeting. My old lady and I wanted to check out the Chumash casino, which is an Indian casino just down the road from Solvang. We ended up parting ways so that my friend could go to his meeting, and my old lady and I could check out the casino.

Once we got to the casino, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they had a special section right in front set aside for motorcycle parking. I parked my bike and we were ready to roll.

motorcycle lawyer Norman Gregory FernandezWe went into the casino and walked around a bit. As usual, my old lady wanted to borrow money so that she could gamble. It seems she never has money of her own when we travel. I gave her $40 to play on the slots. Literally, within five minutes she had won $600. I knew full well that she would gamble the entire $600 away in short order. I told her, “Let’s take the money and go.” At that point she continued to press the maximum bet button. For the first time ever, I walked up to the machine and pressed the cash out button, so that my old lady would be able to leave the casino with some money. The machine printed a ticket, and my old lady walked out of the Chumash casino with approximately $600. She was even able to pay me back the $40 that I loaned her. She was ecstatic to say the least. She knew in her heart that she would blow the money if she stayed at the casino, and was probably grateful to me for cashing her out, but she insisted that she would’ve won at least $10,000 had she remained at the machine. I have seen this lady at Las Vegas, ya right.

At this point it was getting late and we decided to ride back home. Instead of taking the scenic route around the Solvang area through the mountains, I decided to take a straight route to the coast. South on 101, to the 23, to the 118 freeway, to Chatsworth California.

We had a great ride home. The weather was cooling off a bit, and there was very little traffic. At around sundown, we decided to stop by the side of the road, and take in the view of the Pacific Ocean. We took a couple pictures which you can see here.

When we arrived at home, I parked my motorcycle, we got changed into our swimsuits, then jumped into the pool and later took a Jacuzzi. This was the end of a great ride and a great day.

The ride to Solvang which is approximately a 250 mile ride round-trip from my home is an excellent short local trip, and one of my favorite local rides to do on the weekend. Maybe as you read this article, you will want to ride to Solvang on your motorcycle too.

Two Great After Market Products for the Harley Davidson Detachable Tour Pak: (1) A 4.25 Inch Tour Pak Relocation Kit; and (2) Aluminum Docking Mounts to Replace the Stock Harley Davidson Plastic Docking Mounts; My Review!

California Biker Lawyer Norman Gregory Fernandez reviews 2 great products for Harley Davidson MotorcyclesAnyone who has installed the Detachable Tour Pak Rack Kit on their Harley Davidson Motorcycle will soon find a couple of things that could be better.

You can read an article that I wrote about installing a Premium Tour Pak on my Electra Glide by clicking here now.

Tour Pak Relocation Kits

First off, anyone that rides a Harley Davidson Touring Motorcycle will notice that on a stock setup either with the detachable back rest, or standard or detachable tour pak, that it can become very cramped when you have a back seat passenger behind you.

I myself am not fat, nor is my old lady. As a matter of fact my old lady is skinny. Nonetheless we were cramped on my Electra Glide with the detachable sissy bar or the detachable tour pak installed.

I for one don’t mind feeling my old lady behind me on rides, however when you are on a long run doing 500 mile plus days, it is nice to be able to stretch out if you want to. As for her it is nice to not have me using her as a back rest if you get the drift!

I went looking for some way to move her back so that I could stretch out, and to make it comfortable for both of us on long motorcycle runs.

I found 3 after market solutions to relocate the tour pak back.

Kuryakyn makes a 2 inch tour pak relocation kit You can see it by clicking here. They state that it is not compatible with the Harley Davidson Detachable Tour Pak Rack so the Kuryakyn solution was not for me. Besides, I cannot see spending $199.00 for only 2 inches of room!

I Mounted a Portable Garmin GPS on my Motorcycle and in my Car; Here is a review!

California Motorcycle Lawyer Norman Gregory Fernandez discusses GPS units for motorcycles. ** 4/28/2010 Update – I switched to a Garmin 755t from the Nuvi 350 about 6 months ago. The 755t has a wide screen, and wireless FM transmitter which allows me to tune the music in without having to use a cable into my auxiliary. There are many more features on this GPS, it also has built in lifetime free traffic. I got the unit for a hundred and some change on ebay, and am using the ram mount on the handlebar as usual.

** 2/12/08 Update – I lost my Garmin C330 when I forgot to take it off of the trunk of my car – long story. I am now using a Garmin Nuvi 350. The Garmin Nuvi 350 uses a different Ram Mount holder but everything else is the same.

Well I have managed to ride my motorcycle and drive my car for many years all over the nation using old fashion maps, printing out directions on Mapquest, and/or otherwise winging it; well no more, I have entered the 21st Century; I now use a GPS unit.

I decided to buy a portable GPS system a few months ago and all I can saw is “why did I wait so long!”

First off this article is not going to discuss all of the options and things that a GPS system on your motorcycle and car will do. If you want to learn about GPS systems, I am sure a quick Google search will bring you up to speed on GPS systems and their features. The purpose of this article is to discuss what I wanted in a GPS, what I looked at, what I purchased, how I mounted it on my motorcycle, and what I think.

When I went about searching for a GPS system, I wanted a unit that I could use on my motorcycle, car, or any other motor vehicle that I wanted to ride in; a unit that was portable and not permanently installed.

I went to a bunch of motorcycle and GPS forums to see what others were saying. I also looked at professional reviews on sites such as ZDNet, and purchaser reviews from sites that allow their customers to review the units they purchased. On top of everything else a bunch of new manufacturers have recently entered the GPS market.

California Motorcycle Accident Lawyer Norman Gregory FernandezMy initial impression at least from what I learned in my search was that the leading GPS brands were Garmin, Magellan, and TomTom. I could not find anything really good about the new manufacturers in the GPS market game. Guys from electronic stores who were in the know such as Fry’s Electronics told me point blank on the phone and in person to stick with Garmin because they were in industry leader, and they have less returns of Garmin units. I was also told that Magellan and TomTom were good, but that Garmin would be my best bet.

On the internet I found a site which discussed the mapping software that Garmin, Magellan, and TomTom GPS units use, and I found that the software used in the Garmin and Magellan units was supposed to be better for North America than the TomTom units. It is said that the TomTom software is supposed to be better for Europe. Since I do 99.99% of my riding in North America I wanted the best mapping software for North America.

The next issue I considered was whether to buy a waterproof unit to use on the motorcycle and in the car, or should I just buy a regular unit to use for both. By regular, I mean one that is not waterproof. I looked at the Garmin Zumo 550 GPS which is specifically designed for motorcycles, is waterproof, and comes with a motorcycle mount. There is even a Zumo forum for users of the product. The cheapest price I could find on the unit was around 500 bucks plus shipping from online shopping sites. When doing research on this unit on the Zumo forum, I found that many purchasers were having major problems with the unit which were causing them to have to do reboot’s of the unit, or which were causing the units to die on the road. Apparently there is some kind of bug with the unit and many guys on a particular thread were reporting that they got units with the bug. There were many other guys that said their units were ok. In my mind I am not going to pay 500 dollars for a GPS unit that has a known bug, or that would be a hit and miss. I wanted a unit that was free of bugs or problems and would work. I don’t care if the GPS unit is designed for motorcycles or not at that price. Bottom line, I am not going to dish out 500 dollars plus for something that may be buggy.

Harley Davidson King Tour Pak / Premium Luggage Rack / Lock Kit for Tour Pak / Detachable Tour Pak Bracket / Pillow Passenger Backrest Pad for Tour Pak, and more; Installation and Review!

California Motorcycle Accident Lawyer Norman Gregory Fernandez on Harley Davidson Tour PakBetween July 13, 2007, and July 14, 2007, I finally got around to installing a Harley Davidson King Tour Pak with all the goodies, on my Electra Glide. The following is a review of the installation, some pictures, and my review.

First off, I wanted to add a King Tour Pak to my Electra Glide for added luggage space for long trips which I take quite often, and I wanted the Tour Pak to be detachable so that I can use my standard Harley Davidson detachable backrest and luggage rack for local rides. I also wanted to make the ride more comfortable for my old lady and me, and move her back a bit.

Since I already have the mounting kit for my detachable passenger backrest and luggage rack, I did not have to order the mounting kit for the detachable Tour Pak. I had heard that the plastic bushings do wear out on the docking points after a while so I will probable order some spares in the future as needed.

The Harley Davidson King Tour Pak is a custom order product from Harley Davidson because it is manufactured and painted at the factory depending upon your motorcycle and color. My Electra Glide is Vivid Black so that is what I ordered. When you order the King Tour Pak you are told that it can take between 6 to 8 weeks for delivery because it is a custom part. I got lucky and got mine within 3 weeks because Harley Davidson already had a vivid black Tour Pak in stock at the factory.

California Biker Lawyer Norman Gregory FernandezWhen you order the Harley Davidson King Tour Pak, you also need to order other parts with it so that it can be locked, installed, etc. All that comes with the Tour Pak is the actual Tour Pak in the box, some holes pre-drilled in the bottom, a hole for a key set, a rubber mat for the bottom, and a leather pouch. That is about it. Secondly, when I opened the box there were no reflectors, or anything on the outside, except the Harley Davidson inscription painted on the top. Of course it was vivid black!

Along with the Tour Pak I had to order, a lock, and a bunch of separate parts for the lock assembly so that the Tour Pak can be locked. This was not mandatory, but in my opinion it would be stupid to put on a Tour Pak without a lock, and that leaves a big hole on the side!

Luckily the place I ordered my parts from; Chicago Harley Davidson online, found that I was missing a 25 cent washer from my order and added it for me! Along with the drum lock comes two additional keys for the lock which are cut for your specific motorcycle. I needed my VIN number so that Harley Davidson could cut the keys for my motorcycle. Now I have 3 spare keys for my motorcycle. That is a good thing I guess!

A Ride to Newcomb’s Ranch with Reverend Chuck and the Old Lady!

Motorcycle Lawyer Norman Gregory Fernandez with his fiance before riding the Angeles Crest Forest.A friend and client of mine, Reverend Chuck and I talked during the week about taking a little motorcycle ride on Sunday, June 3, 2007. Rev. Chuck is always busy doing weddings and such so we had some time constraints on the ride (which I cannot stand, but what can you do) whereby he had to do a wedding later in the day, and would have to end the ride at 2:30pm. We decided to meet at 9:00am and do as much riding as possible until he had to leave at 2:30pm.

Reverend Chuck had a bad motorcycle accident over a year ago, and still has pain and residual effects from his accident, but he is a trooper, and still loves to ride.

I decided to take Rev. Chuck on a ride through the Angeles Crest Forest up to Newcomb’s Ranch and beyond to a secret spot of mine up in the forest. Newcomb’s Ranch is a famous biker spot up in the hills and has a deep history. I always go by Newcomb’s on any ride through the Angeles National Forest.

Those who have ridden with me through the years know that my secret spot up in the hills past Newcomb’s Ranch is a must stop location for good luck. I always ask everyone who comes with me to do the wood ceremony at this spot for good luck, and because I have been doing it for well over a decade myself. No, I will not explain the wood ceremony unless you do this ride with me!

This particular ride is one of my favorites because you literally ride up to 8 thousand feet above sea level in about 24 miles, and the entire ride is basically nothing but hairpin twisties. On the weekends all types of motorcycle riders own these roads. When you ride past Newcomb’s Ranch, there is almost no one on the road. This ride consists of a two lane road, with some turnouts and intermittent passing lanes.

California Biker Motorcycle Lawyer Attorney Norman Gregory Fernandez with his Rev. Chuck before riding the Angeles Crest Forest.Groups and people that I have lead on this ride are shocked to learn that there is an Alpine Forest just a few miles from downtown Los Angeles, with ski resorts and the works. Everyone always tells me that they did not know!

This ride is usually snowed in during the winter; however, it clears up around March of each year. In March you can still see snow melting in the hills on this ride.

My fiancé (old lady) and I love doing this ride together because there are an infinite number of places to pull into and get frisky up in the hills. Matter of fact, about 5 years ago, I almost lost my motorcycle when I pulled into a hidden place that looked ok, but happened to lead to a shear cliff with a deep incline leading to it. Once I pulled in it was too late. Had my old lady not been there to help me pull the motorcycle out, the bike would have gone over! Suffices is to say, we found another spot.

Hogtunes Speakers for Harley Davidson Baggers, Review.

Hogtunes Speakers for Baggers reviewed by California Biker Motorcycle Lawyer Norman Gregory Fernandez. ** Update 5/22/07 See Below!

** Update 5/25/07 See Below!

Well I finally took the plunge and installed my Hogtunes speakers today. These speakers are supposed to be vastly superior to the stock Harley Davidson speakers that come with the Harley Davidson Advanced Sound System.

You can check out the Hogtunes Speakers which are specifically designed for Harley Davidson Baggers by clicking here now.

I guess some would call this a simple installation, however for me, it was a new experience. I am a lawyer, not a mechanic. I really freaked myself out thinking about removing the front outer fairing on my Electra Glide for the first time, but I knew that in the end it would be a good learning experience, and that I would save tons of money rather than having a dealer do it.

California Personal Injury Biker Lawyer Norman Gregory Fernandez Hogtunes Speaker Review.I went to Sears to buy a really cool Craftsman socket screwdriver set that has 9 sizes of Torx bits, and a whole bunch of other bits, so I could remove the outer front fairing on my Electra Glide.

Before I started to remove the outer faring for the installation of the speakers, I put socks on the spot lights, and a soft cloth on the front fender to protect the paint on the faring and the fender, just in case it fell.

The front 3 screws on the outer front fairing use a number T27 Torx bit, and the inner 4 screws of the outer fairing use a number T25 Torx bit.

Before I proceeded to remove the fairing for the Hogtunes speaker install, I hit the kill switch on the bike so that the inner part of the fairing was not electrified. It is recommended that you disconnect the negative off of the battery before doing work; however, I knew the kill switch shortcut would work.

A Review of the Pro Pad Mini-Beast Air Horn; Thumbs Up!

Pro Pad Mini-Beast Air Horn Package *** June 8, 2009 update below the main article. Check it out!

I just installed the Pro Pad Mini-Beast Air Horn on my Harley Davidson Electra Glide and all I can say is this little beast is truly LOUD!

You can check out the Mini-Beast Air Horn at the Pro Pad website by clicking here now.

This self contained unit will fit on most Harley Davidson motorcycles, and can be fitted to metric and other types of motorcycles. The most unique feature of this air horn which sets it apart from other air horns is the fact that the air compressor and horn are all contained in a stainless steel cover that is not much bigger than a stock Harley Davidson cow bell horn cover. This horn uses the stock horn button, which is to be expected on any aftermarket horn! I would never buy or install an aftermarket horn which did not use the stock motorcycle horn button.

Other types of air horn systems require you to mount trumpets or some other sounding device on the motorcycle somewhere, and then run an air hose from the trumpets to an air compressor. You then have to find a place on the motorcycle to mount or hide the air compressor, which is a hassle.

The Mini-Beast air horn is self contained in the stainless steel cover. Easy!

The other systems I looked at were also much bigger and take up too much room on the bike. I like the fact that the Mini-Beast not only fits in the stock horn position, but it actually compliments the looks of the big V-Twin engine in the Harley.

A rear view of the Pro Pad Mini-Beast Air HornYou may ask why I decided to put an air horn on my Harley; simple; stock motorcycle horns are basically worthless, especially at highway speeds. A loud air horn gives motorcyclist a LEGAL way of getting a cagers attention even with their windows rolled up, and even when they are on the phone. This is a way of getting noticed without having deafening and illegal loud open pipes on your bike.

I will tell you what, at 128 decibels this Mini-Beast will not only legally get cagers attention; it will shock them! Did I say this thing is loud……….

The installation of the Mini-Beast Air Horn was basically no problem at all because everything I needed to install the horn was contained in the package. The package contained the horn itself, which was pre-mounted in its own stainless steel cover, a wire harness, and large and small tie wraps.

1997 and Up, Mustang Plain Regal Ultra Touring Seat for Harley Davidson Electra Glide Review.

California Biker Motorcycle Injury Lawyer Norman Gregory Fernandez Reviews a Mustang Seat for his FHLT Electra Glide Standard. **** June 7, 2008 Update: I have now ridden 1000′s of miles in this saddle, and I highly recommend it. Although it does move you up and forward a bit, the trade-off for sheer comfort is well worth it. My passenger and I have never had a sore or numb butt with this seat. I give it a 9 out of 10!

I just installed a new Mustang Seat PN# 75537 on my FLHT Harley Davidson Electra Glide Standard. I knew before I purchased the seat that it does push you up and forward 1 inch from the stock seat position. I was given this information by Mustang themselves.

Let me start out by saying I have used Mustang single seat (rider/passenger) seats on 3 other motorcycles and loved them! I never had to break in a Mustang Seat, they always felt better than stock right off of the bat! I have always been a big fan of Mustang Saddles.

You can see the seat by I ordered by clicking here, and then scrolling down to PN# 75537.

My first impression of this seat is that either something is wrong with the seat, (defective) or something else is wrong. The seat just does not feel right, nor did it install correctly like my stock seat, and other Mustang Saddles that I have owned.

First off when I went to install the seat, the front lip that goes into the front slot closest to the tank, is not the same as on the stock Harley seat. The Harley Davidson stock seat has a straight up and down tab that goes straight down into the slot. On the Mustang seat there is a little lip, or tab that pushes under and up. It does not go on like the Harley Davidson seat which is basically straight down.

On this seat you are supposed to do a “firm downward chop” on the seat, while pushing the seat forward to get it to move up to the tank panel. Here is Mustangs Instructions for the seat.

Customizing My Harley Davidson Electra Glide a Few Parts at a Time.

Biker Motorcycle Injury Lawyer Norman Gregory Fernandez Customizes His Harley Davidson FLHT Electra GlideAs most motorcycle owners do, I am about to start some limited customization on my Harley Davidson Electra Glide. I have owned many motorcycles in the past and have done extensive customization on each.

The beautiful thing about the Harley Davidson Electra Glide is that it pretty much comes with everything a biker would want. I have already done some limited Customization. I have installed a Screaming Eagle Stage 1 kit, with Screaming Eagle Slip on Mufflers; a Harley Davidson Advanced Sound System; Kuryakyn Harley Davidson Cruise Boards for Engine Guards, and a Harley Davidson Easy Clutch. No bid deal, just the essentials.

However, after doing some recent long distance runs, and with a plan this summer to ride my Harley across country with my fiancé, I have decided to add a few more things to the Electra Glide to make the long trip even better.

For the new customizations that I am going to do, I will write an article on each install, and post links to high quality pictures that I will take as I install each component. Maybe in this way I can help some of you to do the same thing. I am going to be a thrill seeker and do all of my own work.

I have recently ordered a Mustang Ultra Regal one piece seat for rider and passenger; a Harley Davidson King Tour Pak (Vivid Black); a Harley Davidson removable bracket for the Tour pack, with the premium luggage rack, cylinder lock for the tour pak, and locks for the removable bracket. I am also going with a 2.5 inch Tour Pak relocate kit, which moves the Tour Pak back 2.5 inches. I also ordered a Harley Davidson antenna relocation kit that will allow me to use the same antenna when I remove the tour pak for local riding. I opted to keep the whip antenna for better reception.

Going a little bit further, I ordered Kuryakyn Premium ISO Grips which includes the throttle boss; Hogtunes front speakers to replace the stock Harley Davidson speakers; and a Mini-Beast air horn to replace the stock Harley Davidson horn.

I have never personally taken the fairing off of my Electra Glide so this should be a real fun project. I hear getting it back on straight is a nightmare.

So as I do my limited extra customizations, I will post articles about how each install went, and show pictures of the progress. The bike you see in the picture here will look a bit different. I am no mechanic; I am a lawyer. However, in the past I have been able to do some real complex installs and fixes on my motorcycles. I do not do Engine, Carburetion, or Transmission work, but I will try everything else. That is half the fun of owning a motorcycle!

Slow recovery from My Low Speed Accident!

Motorcycle Accident Lawyer Norman Gregory Fernandez

Well I guess I am getting old. As you have probably read below, I was involved in a low speed crash on Saturday, January 6, 2007. A great way to start the New Year…….Not.

It really is true that the older you get; the longer it takes to recover. I have been hobbling around in pain now for almost two weeks. My foot feels like it is getting better but my hamstring is taking a bit longer to heal. The back of my leg is still black and blue from the tear of the muscle.

If any of you have suffered a hamstring tear you will know that it is a pain does not go away no matter what position you are in. Sitting in a chair is the worst, and walking is agony. To add insult to injury, we are suffering from a record cold spell here in Southern California. The cold just makes the pain that much worse.

I have represented many bikers who have suffered injuries that make mine look like a joke. However, pain is pain!

I implore every biker out there to be careful out there on the road. I know when I get back in the saddle; I will be taking it real easy.

I was involved in a Low Speed Crash on Saturday!

Norman Gregory Fernandez Harley Davidson Electra Glide

Well, it can happen to anyone, even a biker lawyer! I had just picked up my bike from the Harley dealership (It was in for the Easy Clutch install and other service) on Saturday, and was out cruising solo. I stopped at a Starbucks to get a cup of joe.

I was riding out of the parking lot when some women pulled out in front of me. Same old story; she pulled right in front of me, less than a second to react.

I locked up the brakes and turned my handle bars hard to the right. I missed her by inches, but I could not hold up my Electra Glide and I dropped her on the right side.

Before I dropped the bike I tried like heck to hold her up but she was at a steep angle and was so heavy that I could not hold her up. The damage to the bike was minimal thanks to the Kuryakyn Highway Boards I have mounted on my front engine guard, and the saddle bag guards on the rear.

I can frankly say that the Kuryakyn Highway Boards saved the fairing and front end of the bike. The right side board did suffer some damage and may have to be replaced but it could have been worse. The right saddlebag guard suffered a nick when the bike went down. I got lucky!

As for me, I somehow managed to suffer a tear to my right hamstring muscle and an injury to my right foot, however I was dammed lucky. It could have been worse.

After the incident I was basically still on the bike with my right foot on the ground, and holding the bike with the engine still running trying to lift her back up to no avail. I screamed to a group of people who were standing in front of Starbucks to help me lift the bike back up. I was more worried about the bike than anything else.

When I looked up the woman was gone. No one got her information.

This is the 3rd time that I have gone down over the years. The old saying is that; it’s not if you are going to go down, it’s a matter of when. In my case I have been very lucky to have only had minor accidents which have not resulted in serious injuries. I have had some very scary close calls!

So the moral to this story at least for me is that I will be very careful in parking lots. You never know when a cager will pop out right in front of you without looking.

Finally Taking the Plunge; Installing an Easy Clutch

Norman Gregory Fernandez, Harley Davidson Electra Glide

It has been a little over a week since my last article. I am sure most of you had a great holiday season. As for me, I had depositions the day after Christmas; just before New Years; just after New Years, and another one yesterday. I have a Court appearance on Friday followed by another deposition on Friday!

I found myself shopping for holiday gifts on Christmas Eve which is kind of like a tradition for me. As usual I was numb while standing in line to buy gifts, thinking about my clients and my cases. It’s hard for a lawyer to turn it off.

My calendar for 2007 is a nightmare come true. Some would say keeping busy is a good thing. As for me, the only thing that keeps me sane is riding my motorcycle, and going to the gym 6 days per week.

I have finally decided to take the plunge and get an Easy Clutch installed on my Harley Davidson Electra Glide today. Don’t get me wrong, working a Harley Davidson clutch builds strong forearm muscles. However with the kind of miles I ride each year, coupled with the fact that it would be nice to ride the twisties without getting carpal tunnel syndrome, I have taken some of my brother’s advice and am getting the Easy Clutch installed!

While I am at it, I will let the dealership do a 10 point inspection on the bike, and change out the fluids.

I have checked out the difference in clutch pull on my Harley as compared to that of my brothers who have the Easy Clutch installed and it is like the difference between night and day!

So there it is. I will let you know how it works out.

UPDATE 5:30pm; I had a Power Supply Crash just as I was getting ready to go to the Harley Davidson Dealership to get the Easy Clutch installed. Being that my personal computer is critical, I had to take care of that issue first. Therefore, I will not get the Easy Clutch installed until Saturday morning!

Thank God my computer is semi back up. I went and purchased a top of the line 650 Watt Antec TruePower Trio. Maybe it is just me but my computer seems to be much faster than before. Once I get everything buttoned back up it will be back to business as usual.

Update, Saturday, January 6, 2006;

I had the Easy Clutch installed. It is like a new bike. I cannot believe how nice and “easy” the clutch pull is now as compared to before! I can quite frankly say that this is a “mandatory upgrade” if you do any real riding on a Harley Davidson. Harley Davidson should include the Easy Clutch stock on all of their motorcycles. This is an A++ upgrade that will save your wrist!
