What is a Gravatar?

A bunch of Avatars

Examples of Computer Avatars

Some of you may have heard of a computer Avatar. No, a computer avatar has nothing to do with a movie, or a video game. A computer avatar is a personalized graphic file or rendering that represents a computer user. There are basically two types of avatars: those used at websites, such as on Web exchange boards, and those used in gaming and virtual worlds.

The simplest type of avatar is a small graphics file used on websites. Websites that offer chat boards often allow members to upload an avatar to represent themselves. The avatar can be a real-life digital photo of the person using it, but is more often an image intended to be a creative alter ego. This might be a game-rendered snapshot of a beast, hero, or heroine; a humorous picture of a pet or cartoonish character; or a design that makes a statement. The avatar appears alongside the user’s posts, easily identifying the author for others at a glance.

So what is a Gravatar? Your Gravatar is an image that follows you from site to site appearing beside your name when you do things like comment or post on a blog. Avatars help identify your posts on blogs and web forums.

Many internet sites will recognize your Gravatar once you create it on the Gravatar website. The Biker Law Blog will also recognize your Gravatar when you comment here, and will put your Gravatar next to your post.

How does it work? It is simply, you go to Gravatar.com, set up an account, either upload your Avatar, or pick one. Then once you go to one of the 1000’s of websites that support Gravatar’s such as this one, your Gravatar will magically appear next to your name when you post a comment.

Have Fun!

Thanks Gary. I was running a liquid site on the previous software that automatically adjusted itself depending upon the width of the users screen.

Unfortunately that format caused customization issues which were easier solved with a fixed width site.

On the other site there were actually 5 separate blogs all put onto one site. Now all categories are in one blog. It will be easier for everyone to navigate, and for me to manage.

We are finished with the phase 1 of the conversion. Next we are going to add some neat things to really spruce it up a bit.

I have been out of town. I will soon start adding some great new articles.

    Norm
