Good for you Dave. I purchased and was about to install the amp kit with the big 6.25 inch speakers, but decided to get a new bike instead. Now I am selling my old bike with the Biketronics kit already in it. I hate to see her go.

I purchased the Biketronics setup with the Hertz 5.25" speakers. I install it tomorrow. Your blog help me with my decision. My stock radio went out and I could have sent it in for repair for $300.00 but I am in agreement with you old technology not worth repairing. I picked up the Biketronics from motorcycleaccessories.com for $481.00

Norman, Great info on the stereo. I have a 2001 Electra Glide Classic and want to upgrade the Stereo. I believe I will go with what has worked for you. I added the rear speaker pods last fall, then found out the stock radio was 2 channel. For now front left and back left are together and same for the right. Getting the fairing loose was a real challenge when I wired previously. You mention in your review that you had an article on how to remove the fairing. I am getting a 404 error when I try to access it. Is there a copy I can get? Thanks and ride safe. Terry

I am glad I could be of assistance Marvin. You will find that it is an easy install and a big improvement over the stock system!

Norm,
Chaplain Marvin Luckie here, Garrison Chaplain at Redstone Arsenal, AL. Active Duty Army for the last 23 years. Finally purchased a Road Glide last year; i have enjoyed every minute. I call it... cycle thearpy after many deployements down range. Thanks for the great article on Sony, Harley's, and research. You covered every detail and I will follow your guidelines. I too am a fan of crutchfield and used them for my F250 and Mustang. I will use them to purchase the Sony. Keep riding and keep writing; I turly sat here this morning and read every detail. I finally found someone like you who does the research, install, and saves a little money. Be safe and thanks again for the great article.
Sincerely,
Marvin

hey norm, just want to share with you something i recently stumbled into. it's basically making your own USB flash drive with a very low profile that it fits under the biketronics splash guard (so you still have your tunes even when riding in the rain).

i bought this microSD card reader made by SIIG: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0032ANCIC/ref=s9_simh_gw_p23_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-3&pf_rd_r=1BR7B7PW6S867ZGDAN54&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938811&pf_rd_i=507846. and inserted an 8GB microSD card from Kingston (you can of course use a higher capacity card).

i already replaced my factory HK receiver with a Sony MEX-BT3800, and this microSD card reader combo works! i went with this model mainly because of BT Audio. now i can stream Slacker Radio or Pandora from my iPhone wirelessly to the Sony receiver, and the sound is CD quality!

take care and good ridin'!

Dan I thought about the bluetooth, I really did. The HD radio was a good tradeoff. I figure there is no need to use an iPhone or ipod if you can simply plug a flash drive in with your entire collection. Another reason for not streaming from my phone is that I want to save the battery on my phone for actual calling :)

I think what I want to do next is put in an amplifier!

Thanks Dan. I will look at the cable you mentioned. There are times when I do use the traffic feature. I could always shorten the cable myself. Choices!
I had Screaming Eagles on my motorcycle. I recently switched to Rush Slip On's. The noise does interfere at highway speeds of 65mph plus because I wear a full face modular helmet with ear plugs in. I may add an amplifier to ensure I can hear it just fine at highway speeds.
